Character Description:
Celino is about average height, coming up just shy of six feet, and lightly framed - he's got the thin look of someone who is active enough to be fit, but not dedicated to it, with a light tan. His eyes are a dark brown, and his hair is cut short but rough, reddish-brown with copper highlights. His outfit is a patched-together medley of t-shirts, work pants, and an old, rough and abused ZBC jacket. The underside of his right eye is blackened, a birthmark. He also owns, but rarely wears, a rather nice suit consisting of slacks, a button-up shirt, and a gray vest.
History:
Celino Castanea is from a huge, branching family, split into two main branches - the Chastain and Castanea families. The Chastains were profitable, working closely with the corporations and achieving limited success in the ZBC. The Castanea have not duplicated their success. Growing up in the area that would become the New Helic Republic, the Castaneas were a family of divided loyalty. The rebellion of the New Helic Republic split the Castaneas further, and split them from the Chastains, denying them support. They were for all the world now strangers in their own land. Many Castaneas joined the rebellion, but not all - and Celino's family was one of those groups. They fled, as best they could, but some older members of the family chose to fight. The Castaneas fell out of favor in the NHR, and by Celino's time, were still far from the power and success they craved in the shadow of the Chastain line. Celino grew up in this family, a family that accepted and yet resented the NHC, cared for by his parents. They were close but often frustrated by difficulties pushing ahead in the NHR. This all changed when Celino was 7. His parents had gone out into the country near his home, and were killed in a tragic accident by, from all accounts, a wild Zoid from the Liger family. Though loved, his few relations could not afford to care for the boy. Things seemed to be about to get harder for Celino, when something surprising happened. One of the Chastains made contact.
A woman named Salomé Chastain, she was a low-ranking executive in the ZBC. A cousin of Celino's mother, she had become aware of the tragedy. She offered to take the boy with her. Nobody else had the resources to manage Celino's care, so he was left to his aunt. Salomé took her nephew with her to the city she lived in, out of the NHR. She was calm and caring, but sometimes distant, especially when Celino brought up his parents. Still, it was all the childhood the boy could care for, and he grew up happy. At first fearful of Zoids, he came to appreciate them, working with a variety of machines brought to his aunt for inspection. The boy found a natural affinity for the machines and developed an interest in mechanics. When he became an adult, his aunt offered him a gift - licensing in the ZBC, authorizing him for the battles. She also offered to provide his first Zoid - it would have to be a repair job, but she would manage the purchase. Hearing this deal, he made an agreement, but put one important condition on it - "No Ligers."
What he ended up with was a busted-up old Revenge Trap, given to him on his 18th birthday. His aunt bought it outright in its condition from the pilot, who seemed more than willing to get rid of it. With his aunt providing the parts, Celino repaired the Zoid and they bonded. Excited to see it up and running, Celino took it out on a joy-ride, sparring a bit with the local kids... and ended up busting up a leg. By the time he'd gotten THAT fixed, another would-be junk-heap had arrived for inspection. Celino, who had been saving up money, offered to buy this one as well, having grown to enjoy fixing Zoids as much as piloting them. His aunt was surprised but helped the deal go through. Within a year he had worked hard enough to completely patch it up, and grown comfortable piloting using his Revenge Trap. On his 19th birthday, his aunt surprised him with another gift - enough money to make up for all that he had earned and spent bringing his new Zoid up to grade. With this, he decided he finally had what it took, and decided to join the official battles.
